Facilitator Development Path

What is the Facilitator Development Path?

The Facilitator Development Path is a mentorship pathway that takes mentees through a process of planning process design and facilitation practice and reflection with an expert facilitator mentor to the point at which the mentee is able to design and facilitate their own species conservation planning workshops.

Who is a good candidate for the Facilitator Development Path?

This pathway is not open to everyone. Individuals selected need to be able to demonstrate that they have completed formal facilitation training; be working for an organization that is willing to both give them time to complete the mentorship and allow them to dedicate a minimum of 20 days per year for at least two years on completion of their mentorship to undertake planning projects for CPSG; and be able to illustrate how they have pro-actively sought prior facilitation practice to demonstrate they possess the necessary motivation to be a facilitator.

How long does it take to complete the Facilitator Development Path?

The duration of the pathway varies depending on both the pace of individual mentee development and the availability of planning workshop opportunities for their practice. Depending on the mentee’s prior experience, the process might take from 12 to 24 months to complete.

What do I get out of completing the Facilitator Development Path?

Assuming your mentor feels that you have been able to demonstrate successfully that you can facilitate a species conservation planning workshop, from initial design through to the write-up of the plan, then you end up with a certificate that acknowledges you as a ‘CPSG Facilitator’. From that point forward, you can- with CPSG oversight- design and run your own planning workshops and use where appropriate CPSG’s logo on the plans you help to produce.

"Enrolling on CPSG’s Facilitator Development Path has provided a valuable opportunity to deepen my skills in conservation planning and to broaden my network of peers who work in this field. The one-to-one guidance from an experienced mentor has been an invaluable component of this process. The opportunity to facilitate conservation-planning processes as part of CPSG’s network of facilitators has opened windows into new conservation challenges, outside of my own experience, and the skills that I have gained have also helped to strengthen the planning of the projects that I work with on a daily basis."
