CPSG's Structure and Network

The IUCN SSC Conservation Planning Specialist Group (CPSG) is a Specialist Group of the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Species Survival Commission.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is the world’s oldest and largest global environmental organization. It is a union of government and civil society organisations. It has seven expert Commissions, the largest of which is the Species Survival Commission (SSC), with a global membership of more than 10,000 individuals. Around the world, SSC members work collaboratively, using a cycle of assessment, planning and action, to catalyze conservation for species (shown below). CPSG leads the SSC in the planning component of this cycle.

CPSG's Members

CPSG is supported by a global volunteer network of 270 professionals, each of whom is invited to become a CPSG member by the Chair. CPSG members are regularly called upon to share their unique expertise and knowledge in the field of conservation to support the mission of CPSG. Among other activities, CPSG members participate in workshops and task forces, collaborate on projects and written reports, help translate our publications, and share their conservation skills with the CPSG community.

CPSG's Strategic Committee

The CPSG Strategic Committee is a subset of some 35 CPSG members, whose purpose is to advise the CPSG Chair and staff on matters of current and future strategic interest to CPSG.

Global Conservation Network

The Global Conservation Network (GCN) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization, created in 1991 to fund the work of CPSG. The finances of GCN and CPSG are overseen by the GCN Financial Board. Annual financial reporting can be found in the CPSG Annual Reports here
