CPSG Announces Leadership Transition

CPSG Announces Leadership Transition

Starting February 2025, we are entering a new chapter of leadership at the IUCN SSC CPSG. After 14 years as Chair, Dr. Onnie Byers is stepping down, and we are pleased to welcome Dr. Caroline Lees as the new Chair of CPSG.

Honoring Dr. Onnie Byers' Legacy
Onnie has been an integral part of CPSG for over 30 years, leading efforts to expand our global reach, strengthen conservation networks, and build capacity in species conservation planning around the world. Her leadership has left a lasting impact on both CPSG and the wider conservation community.

Reflecting on this transition, Onnie shared: "Caroline is extremely creative, and highly skilled technically and socially. She has an extensive global network and exciting new ideas to help CPSG increase its profile and productivity. Caroline will undoubtedly take CPSG to new heights. I have complete confidence in her, in CPSG’s exceptionally
talented staff and Regional Resource Centers teams".

Welcoming Dr. Caroline Lees
Dr. Lees has been a dedicated part of CPSG since 2008, contributing as a facilitator, PVA modeler, and, more recently, as Director of Science in Multispecies Planning. With her extensive expertise and passion for conservation, she is well-positioned to guide CPSG into the future.

"Stepping into the role of Chair is a huge privilege and a daunting one, but I could not imagine a better team to be embarking on this adventure with," wrote Dr. Lees. "I look forward to working with many of you in the months and years ahead as we continue to support conservation efforts worldwide."

Looking Ahead
Now with Caroline at the lead, CPSG remains committed to advancing effective conservation planning and fostering collaboration across the global conservation community.
