Change the Future for the Sulu Hornbill

Sulu hornbill

The Sulu hornbill, endemic to the Philippines and found only on the island of Tawi-Tawi in the Sulu archipelago, is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Due to their restricted range, these birds face threats of habitat loss and degradation from illegal logging and mining, as well as small population effects. In 2019, a group of 44 participants representing 23 organizations gathered in Manila, Philippines, to develop a comprehensive plan to conserve the Sulu hornbill.

Take Action

The report lists the 10-year goals for the effort:

  • To protect or enhance sufficient habitat to support viable populations of Sulu hornbills
  • To engage communities in conservation, ensuring mutual benefits
  • To promote systems of governance, land use and security that support conservation success for Sulu hornbills in Tawi-Tawi
