Numerous species of invertebrates endemic to the Santa Maria Island in the Azores have been listed as Endangered and Critically Endangered by the IUCN Red List. Deforestation, damaging agricultural practices, invasive species, and mass tourism are considered some of the threats to the invertebrate species. In 2020, a group of participants representing 37 stakeholders and organizations from Santa Maria convened to develop a comprehensive plan to protect 43 threatened invertebrate species.
